Read the Intro to Godot presentation. It’s a basic guide for understanding the Godot IDE since it is a bit intimidating initially. It will walk you through how to set up Godot, which you want to do ASAP if you want to be an active member.
You’ll find with Godot, you don’t have to code as much as in a framework or a CS course. However, you still need to code with the appropriate script editor in order to have the best workflow and avoid wasting time on errors that can easily be resolved with the proper software pointing them out. A good script editor should be able to provide autocomplete (method suggestions while typing), debugging, and generally have quality-of-life features. These features are NOT part of the built-in script editor in Godot, so do not use it.
We will use C#, a language with syntax almost perfectly resembling Java but with slightly different conventions. Read up on some useful C# conventions and the recommended IDE for this club, JetBrains Rider.
(If, for some reason, there are performance or storage concerns with JetBrains Rider, you may use VSCode: How to set up VScode?)
Time for your first lab! Do the lab at the end of the Godot Introduction slideshow, “Easy Artwork Printing.” This lab is designed to be significantly easier, but Godot is still a new editor to you, so don’t worry if it’s challenging. If you have any questions or technical issues, you may ask questions in #assistance or voice chat with others to resolve them.
Once you are ready to submit it, zip it up and put it into the #share-lab channel, naming it with your first name and the lab number (e.g., Narein Lab 1). You will eventually be graded in a private thread under #grading where you will receive a score. That score will then be used to assign you points in #leaderboard (Generally 100 points a lab, more with extra credit). Top performers on the leaderboard get bragging rights and potentially leadership roles in future semesters. You can also resubmit an infinite number of times based on the feedback you received from grading, getting full credit for any corrections you successfully make.
